What Are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is a prosthetic tooth that’s placed in the jawbone to replace a missing tooth from root to crown. The “root” is fabricated from titanium, which is well-suited to fusing with human bone and is used regularly in surgical restorations. A customized dental crown is then fixed to the post, replacing the visible portion of the missing tooth.

If you’re living with one or more missing teeth, dental implants may be the perfect solution to give you back your smile. The ideal candidate for implants is a non-smoker with good oral health, sufficient jawbone density, and healthy gums. Dental implants are a versatile restorative treatment, offering a reliable replacement for individual missing teeth, a complete arch, or anything in between.

Dental Implant Process

Initial Consultation

You’ll first attend a consultation with Dr. Johnson so he can determine if you qualify for dental implants. Your teeth, gums, and jaw will be examined for any issues that may complicate the implant procedure.

If any underlying oral health problems are found, he’ll provide the necessary treatment to reduce any issues and boost your implant candidacy. Patients with gum disease or insufficient jawbone density may need a supplemental procedure to qualify for implants.

Placing Your Implants

You may be able to receive your dental implant restoration in as few as two appointments, depending on your individual oral needs. Dr. Johnson will begin by administering a local anesthetic to numb the targeted area. We also offer dental sedation methods for patients who may feel anxious about the procedure.

Once the numbness sets in, our implant dentist will make a small incision in your gums to access your jaw bone and place the titanium fixture. From there, he’ll place a temporary dental crown to protect the implant site from bacteria while it goes through the process of osseointegration. Osseointegration occurs when your implant fuses to your jawbone over time, which can take between three to six months to complete.

Placing Your Restoration

Once your mouth has healed completely, you’ll return to our office to receive your customized dental crown. Dr. Johnson will ensure your crown matches your teeth for a natural appearance. After placing your crown and making any necessary adjustments, you’re ready to show off your new, restored smile!
